Article: Refuelling Precautions
From Sun Cruiser Magazine

Before refuelling, the skipper should ensure the fuel goes into the fuel tank and NOT the water tank - an easy mistake to make if the deck fittings are similar, and one that creates a serious problem. Ensure the following steps are taken:

Before starting to refuel
1. Boat is securely tied up.
2. Engines are switched off.
3. All passengers and crew are put ashore
4. Portable tanks are taken ashore for refuelling.
5. All open flames are extingushed (especially if there is a propane refrigerator on board.)
6. The required amount of fuel is determined.
7. No electrical switching takes place.
8. No smoking on board or on the dock.
9. Ports, hatches, and doors are closed.

During Refuelling
10. The correct deck plate is removed (fuel, NOT water).
11. Nozzle held firmly against fill pipe to avoid static spark.
12. Tank is not overfilled.
13. Spillage is wiped up and cleaned with detergent.

After refuelling
14. Boat opened up to ventilate.
15. Blower turned on to clear fuel vapours.
16. Test made for fuel vapour.
17. Engine started.
18. Passengers re-embarked.
19. Cast off.
